Audra's versatility and breadth in her career as an artist is unmatched. She has won seven Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award. As the winner of an unprecedented seven Tony Awards (two Grammy Awards) as well as an Emmy Award, McDonald was listed in Time magazine's list of 100 people who are influential in 2015. In addition, she was awarded President Barack Obama's National Medal of Arts for her achievements. She has a home in television, film and Broadway. Her stunning soprano is a perfect fit for the stage. Apart from her theater job, she is also pursuing many a career in singer and a concert artist. She performs regularly at the most prestigious venues in the world. McDonald was raised within Fresno California by her musical parents. She studied classical music at the Juilliard School, New York. The year 1994 was the year after she graduated from Juilliard School, McDonald was awarded the Tony Award for "Best Performance of a Leading Actress Musical" for her performance in Carousel. After four more years of acting in Broadway's most acclaimed productions, Master Class by Terrence M. McNally (1996) and Ragtime (1998) and Ragtime (1998), she was awarded two more Tony Awards. In 2004 she was nominated for her fourth Tony Award, starring in A Raisin in the Sun alongside Sean Diddy Combs. And in 2012, her fifth Tony and her first nomination in the Leading Actress category were won by her role as the titular character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. The actress made Broadway historical records in 2014 when she became the most popular Tony Award nominee. In her role as Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill as well as the role which was also the catalyst for the career of her Olivier Award nominated debut on London's West End in 2017, was her six award. The actress also broke the record of most awards won by one actor. McDonald also has credits for theatre shows, including The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV 2004 110 in the Shade (2006) Twelfth Nigh (2009) The Twelfth Night also was the Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut shuffle Along Or the Making of the Musical Sense of 1921, and all That Followed (16) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (192019) as well as Ohio State Murders (2023) McDonald made her television debut in the award-winning Peabody Award winning CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First Hundred years. Her next role was as a recurring actor on NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit where she starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald was awarded the first Emmy for her performance as a character in the HBO adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit written by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003, she was back on television, this time in Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., which starred Josh Brolin. Then, in the year 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year she was an actor who appeared on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald's role in HBO movie Lady Day At Emerson Bar Restaurant earned her four times an Emmy nomination in 2016. The Bite is a drama with six episodes based on an epidemic, produced by Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. She appeared with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. She starred in 2009 as she was the U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's legal drama The Good Wife. In 2018 McDonald returned to her role as Liz Reddick as a regular in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She received three Critics Choice Award nods for the role. The actress is currently an actor in Julian Fellowes' historic film The Gilded Age.
